EXPLAINER 5 OF 6 / GAP 3
A bike count from 2011.
Nothing newer.
The last official count of El Segundo’s bikeways that turned up is from a 2011 regional plan. Fifteen years later, nobody can say from public records how much of it was built.
The bikeway inventory needs an update
What the records show
The 2011 South Bay plan counted 5.8 miles of bikeways in El Segundo and proposed 21.3 more. No newer official count turned up. The 22-mile beach path runs along the shore, but the stations and job centers sit inland.

Why it matters
Our read
You can’t fix what you can’t measure. Without a current count, it’s hard to know where the network breaks, or to ask for money to finish it.
The beach path is a regional draw, and the rail stations and job centers are inland. A few east-west links would connect them, which is the kind of small, visible project a neighborhood can rally around.
What would help
Ideas to pledge toward
What would help estimate our ideas, not a plan anyone has adopted
- Publish a current bikeway count.
- Connect the three K Line stations to the beach path with protected lanes on east-west streets.
- Add bike parking at the stations, starting with El Segundo and Mariposa.
