Arriving somewhere new is a lot. This is a slower way in: one thing to do, one place to be and one small practice each day. Seven days, and the town starts to feel like yours.
No account, no sign-up. Marking a day done is remembered on this device only.
Be somewhere. Every day names a place to go and stay a while, without buying anything.
A small practice. A minute of attention. Suggestions, not claims.
Your first week.
DAY 1
Get your footing.
Do
Sign up for Alert SouthBay, the emergency notification system the City points residents to.1 Save two numbers: 9-1-1 for emergencies, and the police non-emergency line, 310-524-2760.2
Be
Go to the ocean and look back at the town. El Segundo Beach runs along Vista del Mar, and Dockweiler State Beach is just north, with restrooms, showers and the beach bike path.3
Practice
Before you open a map, walk ten minutes in one direction and notice three things you’d tell a friend about.
DAY 2
The admin of arriving.
Do
Get the small chores off your mind. In a house or duplex, trash, recycling and organics come from EDCO; in a building of three or more units, it’s the owner’s job, not the City’s.4 Water account questions go to the City’s water line.5 If you moved within California, the DMV wants your new address within 10 days.6
Be
Your own kitchen table. Arriving is mostly small tasks; give them one sitting.
Practice
Write down everything that still feels unsettled. Do one. Leave the rest for tomorrow without guilt.
DAY 3
Find the rhythm.
Do
If it’s Thursday, walk the El Segundo farmers market at 350 Main Street, 3 to 7 p.m., year round.7 If it isn’t, check what’s on today and pick one small thing.
Be
Main Street, slowly, end to end.
Practice
Go back at the same time next week. Rhythm is how a place becomes yours.
DAY 4
A place to be.
Do
Visit the El Segundo Public Library at 111 West Mariposa Avenue. It’s open 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday.8
Be
Library Park, the lawn and gazebo on the 600 block of Main Street.9
Practice
Sit for fifteen minutes with your phone in a pocket. Let the place happen around you.
DAY 5
Learn one name.
Do
Introduce yourself to the two neighbors closest to you. Offer one small thing: a hand with a box, a tip about the street, a ladder.
Be
Your own block. Then, when you’re ready, a Park Circle for walking, sketching, reading or AI and coffee, or small ways to help nearby.
Practice
When you learn a name, say it back once. It’s the smallest kindness there is.
DAY 6
A quiet hour.
Do
Take the quiet minute below. Then give yourself an hour with nothing scheduled.
Be
The beach near the end of the day. Fair warning from the County: Dockweiler sits next to LAX, and “the noise can get quite loud for some.”3 Planes count as scenery here.
Practice
Breathe in for four, out for six. Count ten of them, watching the water.
DAY 7
Make it yours.
Do
Pick one: a classic film or concert at Old Town Music Hall, where silent films are played live on the pipe organ;10 a Resident Recreation ID, bought in person with proof of residency;11 or a date from the City’s special events.12
Be
Wherever you’ve now been twice. That’s your place.
Practice
Tell the guide one thing you noticed this week that a newcomer should know. Share it here. The next person to arrive gets your welcome.
A QUIET MINUTE
Nothing to read. Just breathe.
Follow the circle: in as it grows, out as it settles. In for four, out for six. One minute, no sound, nothing saved.
in
That’s a minute. Welcome back.
