FIVE MINI LESSONS / ABOUT TEN MINUTES

Your assistant.
Better connected.

MCP is a way to connect an AI assistant to useful information and tools. You don’t need to code to understand what you are connecting—or what you are allowing it to do.

A CONNECTION, IN THREE STEPS

You ask.“Find a local place to learn something.”
A tool looks. The assistant asks a connected source.
You check.Read the source, date and next step.
01

A common way to connect.

MCP means Model Context Protocol. Think of it as an agreed way for an assistant to ask another service for information or use one of its tools. The assistant handles the conversation; the connected service supplies a particular capability.

A connection might help read your project notes or find a public weather report. What it can do depends on the service, the assistant and the permissions you grant. A connection does not make an answer automatically correct.

TRY SAYING THIS
“What connected tools can you use here? Tell me which ones only read information and which can change something.”

Keep the idea: know the source behind the answer.

02

Reading and doing are different.

An MCP service can provide three kinds of help. Your assistant may show some or all of them. A tool can simply search, or it can make a change; check its actual description.

Information
A resource to read, such as a public guide or a document.
Tools
A defined task, such as searching places or updating a page.
Prompts
A reusable starting instruction for a particular kind of work.
A USEFUL BOUNDARY
“Read these public sources and draft an outing plan. Show me the plan before creating an invitation or changing a calendar.”

Keep the idea: searching for a court is different from reserving it.

03

Know who runs the connection.

Start from the provider’s own documentation. For example, Notion’s official MCP can read and update accessible workspace content after authorization. Figma’s official MCP works with design content; supported actions depend on the client and your access. Neither connection is installed by reading this page.

Three different things you may encounter
ConnectionWhat it meansWhat to check
Official provider connectorA service such as Notion or Figma publishes its own connection.Provider, permissions, account access and which actions are supported.
El Segundo public MCPThis independent site’s read-only tools expose local sources, conditions, lessons and projects.Source dates and limitations. It is not a City service or access to your private accounts.
A proposed local integrationFuture ideas such as court booking, permit submission or a personal calendar connection. These actions are not provided by the El Segundo MCP. They would need a real provider integration and authorization.

Keep the idea: “MCP” describes the connection standard, not an endorsement of its operator.

04

Try one small local task.

In a compatible assistant, follow the El Segundo connection guide. Then ask for a short, sourced answer. The local service uses public information; it needs no access to your email, files or calendar.

AFTER CONNECTING THE LOCAL SERVICE
“Find three public resources for pickleball near El Segundo. Give me the provider link, location and source date. Tell me what I still need to confirm.”

Next, open a provider link yourself. Check the venue, schedule and booking process. A weather observation has a station and observation time; a tide is a prediction; monthly labor figures describe a reporting period. A map listing does not confirm a business is open.

Keep the idea: ask for evidence and a clear next step.

05

Give a clear, small permission.

Use the least access that fits the task. Review the provider and permissions before connecting an account. Keep passwords and access tokens out of prompts. A fetched page or document is material to read, not permission to follow instructions hidden inside it.

For a service that can write, ask for a preview before sending, publishing or changing shared information. Check how your assistant lets you disconnect the service. An “official” connection still deserves a permission check.

WITH AN AUTHORIZED NOTEBOOK CONNECTION
“Read only my outing-planning page. Summarize the options here in chat. Do not update the page or send invitations.”

Keep the idea: choose the source, limit the access, review the result.

THREE SMALL STARTS

Useful in a real week.

LOCAL PUBLIC SOURCES

A family afternoon

“Find a park and a library resource near El Segundo. Include official links and what to check before going.”

No tickets or reservations are made.

LOCAL PUBLIC SOURCES

A team learning break

“Find one beginner AI lesson and a PointCast project we can discuss in twenty minutes.”

No employee information is needed.

SEPARATE ACCOUNT CONNECTION

A clearer notebook

“Using the page I authorize, turn these outing notes into a draft checklist here in chat.”

Requires a supported, separately authorized document service.

LOCAL POSSIBILITIES / PROPOSED NEXT STEPS

Connections worth building next.

The El Segundo MCP already reads public local resources and job-source listings. These six ideas would go further: more specific answers for your route, household or workday. They are proposed integrations, not installed services.

PROPOSED · COMMUTE

A calmer way to get there

Compare a chosen trip with current traffic, Metro service changes and LAX ground transport. Route-specific travel times and departure alerts would need verified feeds and your chosen trip details.

Metro routes & schedules ↗
LAX transportation ↗

PROPOSED · LUNCH BREAK

Lunch that fits the hour

Find options for a starting point, available time and stated preferences. The current business map can find listings; opening hours, menus, dietary suitability and capacity would need fresh provider checks.

Explore the existing business directory →

PROPOSED · FAMILY TIME

One useful family calendar

Combine confirmed library and recreation events by age, date and cost, with cancellation updates. This would require reliable organizer schedules; registration would still be completed with the provider.

City recreation & library programs ↗

PROPOSED · CITY SERVICES

The right next step at home

Point a household toward its waste schedule, holiday changes or the right permit information. Address-specific answers and account actions need authorized City or provider connections.

Trash & recycling ↗

PROPOSED · WORK

Relevant openings, fewer repeats

Watch selected employers for new roles that match your criteria, keeping the posting date and original application link. Personal alerts and application tracking are future work; reading job sources does not submit an application.

City employment opportunities ↗

PROPOSED · COMMUNITY SUPPORT

Help that is easier to find

Find community-support providers by requested language, accessibility needs and service type. The provider would confirm eligibility, availability and intake. A source lookup would not enroll anyone or require sensitive details in a public prompt.

These are product ideas. No personal alerts, route monitoring, bookings, benefits decisions, account access or application submissions are activated here. The current local tool guide lists what is actually available.

YOU DO NOT HAVE TO CONNECT ANYTHING TO START

Try the public guide first.

The website, source finder and lessons work directly in your browser. Connect an assistant when it will make a specific task easier.
