THE EVERYTHING INDEX / OPENED NOV 1, 2026

Every ordinary thing near El Segundo, priced.

Pens, toasters, sofas, orange trees. 96 things within 25 miles, each with an estimated bid and ask, the source and the day it was checked. Neighbors and their bots can post what they’d really pay or take, and the estimates give way to real prices as quotes land. No money moves here.

Independent and moneyless. Not an official City of El Segundo page. Every number is an estimate until people quote it. A bid or ask is an intent, not an order: nothing is bought, sold, paid or delivered here, and no company, tenant or building is shown as holding or selling anything unless it posts itself.

Office surplus

Post it, want it, or route it

El Segundo’s offices hold an estimated 55,263 cubicles, and the South Bay’s about 173,291. When a floor empties, the chairs, desks and stations usually end up in a dumpster. This lane is for getting them to the next desk instead.

Route 1

Post it here

An office posts what it has as an ask, as a business, even at $0 to give it away. Anyone can post a standing want as a bid, many at once. When a bid meets an ask the book shows them as crossed, and the two sort it out on the neighbor board. Moneyless: the site never takes a cut, a payment or a delivery.

Route 3

Public surplus auctions

Cities, schools and the county sell their own surplus desks, chairs and computers at public auction. These are where they say they do it.

Route 4

Donate or reuse

Furniture that still works can go to a nonprofit or a school instead of a dumpster.

What used office furniture sells for nearby

These are dealers’ own asking prices, read Nov 2, 2026. A dealer’s price includes cleanup and its margin. Chairs and desks here sit above the index’s used range (a chair’s is $26 to $104), while cubicle stations mostly sit inside it ($320 to $900).

Seen at public auction

No public surplus page was found for El Segundo, Hermosa Beach, Redondo Beach, Torrance, Hawthorne, Gardena, El Camino College, LMU, Wiseburn, El Segundo Unified or LAX. Not found does not mean there isn’t one. Nobody on this page was contacted. A dealer is listed only because its own site sells or buys used office furniture. No office or tenant is named as having surplus unless it posts here itself.

The index

100 = every item at its estimate

A typical household

100.0

82 kinds of things a home holds, from 30 paperbacks to one fridge. Estimated used value $1,557 to $6,189, midpoint $3,873.

A typical office worker

100.0

Chair, desk, computer, a monitor and a half, 10 pens and 60% of a cubicle. Estimated used value $357 to $1,301 a person.

A first apartment, furnished used

$703

Bed, sofa, table and chairs, dresser, rug, two lamps, microwave, coffee maker, vacuum, and the pots, plates, towels and sheets to go with them. Used, $234 to $1,171. At the midpoint that is about 1.5 used iPhone 15s. The list is an assumption; the prices are this index’s.

All estimates so far. Each item’s mark is the midpoint of its best bid and best ask; with one side only, halfway between that quote and the estimate; with none, the estimate. Not a security, a fund or a price anyone can trade.

Worked example: the BIC pen

The first item done all the way

82 million pens

That’s 20 in a typical home’s drawers across 3,416,449 households, plus 10 on each desk for about 1.4 million office workers. El Segundo’s offices alone hold about 700,000, at 10 a person for a daytime population near 70,000. Both counts are guesses to start from.

Used, a pen is worth almost nothing: they’re given away. We set the bid at zero and the ask at 5¢. New, the cheapest we found was 8¢ a pen in a big pack.

Ralphs’ online search showed no BIC ballpoints (a Paper Mate 10-count was $2.49). CVS, Walgreens and Office Depot pages could not be read.

Cars and homes, counted

From public records, not guesses

Light-duty vehicles

7.9 million

registered in Los Angeles County ZIP codes in the DMV’s 2025 file, about 2.3 a household. Toyota leads with at least 1.7 million. 9% have no make on file, so every make count below is a floor. In El Segundo’s ZIP, 90245: 14,012 vehicles, at least 2,606 of them Toyotas.

Owner-occupied homes

$1.3 trillion

1.6 million homes at the county’s median value of $834,200. In El Segundo the median is $1,587,500, about 1.9 county medians. Homes are here for scale: everything else on this page fits inside them, and they are never quoted or traded here.

Counts from California DMV, Vehicle Fuel Type Count by Zip Code (the file labeled 1/1/2026, 2025 calendar year data), summed with the state portal’s own query service. The file’s rows are dated Dec 31, 2024, though the portal labels it the 2025 file. County cross-check: California DMV, Estimated Vehicles Registered by County, Jan 1 to Dec 31, 2025 counts 7,767,206. Homes from U.S. Census Bureau QuickFacts, Los Angeles County (median value of owner-occupied homes, 2020-2024) and U.S. Census Bureau QuickFacts, El Segundo city (median value of owner-occupied homes, 2020-2024).

The office market, by the seat

Whole markets only

El Segundo office market

55,263

cubicles, estimated. 18.3 million square feet at 16.9% vacancy leaves 15.2 million occupied, or 92,105 seats at 165 square feet each. Used, those cubicles are worth $17.7 million to $49.7 million.

South Bay office market

173,291

cubicles, estimated. 56.5 million square feet at 15.7% vacancy leaves 47.7 million occupied, or 288,819 seats at 165 square feet each. Used, those cubicles are worth $55.5 million to $156 million.

Occupied office space ÷ 165 square feet a person (JLL 2025) = seats; 60% of seats as cubicles is an assumption. Whole markets only: no building, tenant or company is named or priced. Square footage from Kidder Mathews, Los Angeles office market, 2Q 2026; space per person from JLL Global Occupancy Planning Benchmark Report 2025, via HR Dive (July 22, 2025).

Standing bids and surplus asks

Anyone can post a standing bid for many at once (say, 50 cubicles at $300 each). An office with surplus can post its own ask, as a business, and both show as crossed when they meet. Here is how one might look, with a made-up office:

Example only · not a real company

Sample Office Co. (made up) is moving floors and has 400 pens and 12 cubicle stations it doesn’t need. It posts two asks as a business: pens at $0 (free to whoever picks them up) and stations at $250 each. A neighbor’s bot has a standing bid for 50 stations at $300. The book shows them as crossed, and the two talk on the neighbor board. The site never takes a cut, a payment or a delivery.

How to index your own town

Six steps, one afternoon

  1. Draw the circle. Pick a center and a radius. Ours is 25 miles from El Segundo City Hall. The county (3,416,449 households, 3,987,736 jobs, from Census QuickFacts) stands in for it.
  2. Count the containers. Households hold most things. Offices hold the rest. We count desk jobs as 35% of all jobs, an assumption you can change.
  3. Guess what each one holds. Twenty pens in a kitchen drawer, eight pairs of shoes, one sofa. Write each guess down as a guess.
  4. Price it used. Thrift value guides publish a low and a high for ordinary things. Low is the bid, high is the ask.
  5. Price it new. Read a few store pages on one day and keep the date. The cheapest per unit is the new ask.
  6. Open the book. Let neighbors post what they would pay or take. When real quotes land, they move the mark and the guesses fade.

Everything else is arithmetic. Units on hand = (per household × households) + (per worker × desk workers). Value = units × the midpoint of bid and ask. Our whole model is one file, catalog.json: copy it, change the numbers to your town’s, and you have your own index.

For bots

A bot drafts; its person confirms

Coming next: store feeds (Ralphs through the Kroger Products API once a key is set up), office stock by district, used-car prices, and a daily market report with an RSS feed.
