UNIVERSITY OF EL SEGUNDO / SKILLS STUDY / CHECKED OCT 30, 2026

What should
El Segundo learn?

Which skills could help El Segundo residents, and how could neighbors learn them together? This study connects dated workforce evidence with learning resources and proposes practical sessions in AI, manufacturing and other fields.

Independent study, not a school. Not an official City of El Segundo page, and not written with or for any employer, college or agency listed. The University of El Segundo is an independent learning project, not an accredited program. Facts are dated records from public pages, checked Oct 30, 2026. The model below is a proposal.

The thesis

Why a study, and why here

Our aim is to help neighbors learn useful skills together. We propose starting with AI literacy alongside introductions to manufacturing, care work and other career paths.

This is a proposal to test, not a measurement of local training needs or a promise of higher pay. The evidence below covers different geographies and dates; national AI surveys do not tell us how many El Segundo residents use AI or need training.

The next step would be to ask residents and providers which sessions would help, then try a small first term and publish what participants found useful.

How the University would work

A proposal: 4 tracks, built on what’s already here

We propose a small learning project with a schedule, teachers, borrowed rooms and a way to ask whether it helped. The tracks below would introduce residents to outside programs and offer a local first step. Hosts, teachers, funding and sessions are not confirmed.

Track 1

AI for everyday life and small business

For: Any resident, and the owners and staff of local shops, offices and restaurants.

You leave able to: use an AI assistant to write, plan, research and check work, protect private information, and tell a good answer from a confident wrong one.

  1. Your first useful hour with an AI assistant
  2. Writing, menus, flyers and replies to reviews
  3. Checking an AI answer against a real source
  4. Privacy, scams and what not to paste in
  5. One small automation for your business

Builds on: El Segundo Public Library digital library, LA County Library online learning, CSU Dominguez Hills online AI courses and South Bay SBDC at El Camino College. Taught by: Proposed invitees, not yet confirmed: local practitioners and small-business owners, with the SBDC for business questions.

Track 2

Making things: hard tech and manufacturing basics

For: Adults changing careers, recent graduates, and anyone curious about the factories down the street.

You leave able to: understand what machinists, welders, technicians and quality inspectors do, try the tools, and know the paid routes in.

  1. A tour of the jobs: machining, welding, electronics, quality
  2. Reading a drawing and measuring a part
  3. How apprenticeships work and who pays
  4. Using AI on the shop floor, within the rules
  5. Next step: El Camino College or the workforce board

Builds on: El Camino College Manufacturing Technology, El Camino College Machine Tool Technology, El Camino College Aerospace Apprenticeship, Northrop Grumman machining apprenticeship and South Bay Workforce Investment Board. Taught by: Proposed invitees, not yet confirmed: technicians and engineers from local manufacturers, El Camino College instructors.

Track 3

Space industry pathways for students and families

For: Middle and high school students in El Segundo and nearby districts, and their parents.

You leave able to: see the range of space jobs beyond astronaut and engineer, and map a route through local schools, colleges and internships.

  1. What a satellite company actually does all day
  2. Family night: routes from local schools and colleges
  3. Math and code you’ll use, with AI as a tutor not a shortcut
  4. Internships, scholarships and clearances, explained plainly

Builds on: Da Vinci Schools, Space Systems Command STEM outreach and El Camino College Aerospace Apprenticeship. Taught by: Proposed invitees, not yet confirmed: engineers and early-career staff from Aerospace Alley, school pathway teachers, Space Systems Command outreach.

Track 4

Creative and media work with AI

For: Writers, designers, video makers, musicians and the businesses that hire them.

You leave able to: use AI image, video and writing tools with skill and honesty, credit the work, and build a small portfolio piece about the town.

  1. Making with AI, and labeling it honestly
  2. Local stories: research, interview, publish
  3. Short video and sound for a local business
  4. Rights, credit and what clients will ask

Builds on: UCLA Extension and LA County Library online learning. Taught by: Proposed invitees, not yet confirmed: local creatives and the elsegundo.xyz and PointCast editors.

Formats

  • Library evenings. Ninety-minute, hands-on sessions in a library room or the Rec Park clubhouse, one topic each, laptops welcome, no sign-up beyond a headcount.
  • Company-hosted sessions. An engineer, technician or recruiter explains one real job and what it takes, on public material only. No recruiting pitch, no export-controlled content.
  • Peer cohorts. Six to ten neighbors could start an eligible course together and meet weekly to finish it. Check fees and access before choosing a course.
  • Open lessons online. Every session leaves a short written lesson on elsegundo.xyz and a note on PointCast, so people who missed it, and AI agents that read the site, can learn from it.

Who teaches

  • Neighbors with jobs worth explaining. Aerospace engineers, machinists, nurses, editors, chefs and shop owners who already live or work in the radius.
  • The colleges and the workforce board. We would ask El Camino College, the South Bay Workforce Investment Board and the adult school to explain possible next steps.
  • AI-assisted, human-led. AI tools help draft lessons and check sources; a named person teaches and signs every lesson.

Paying for it fairly

  • Free to attend. Sessions stay free for residents. Rooms are borrowed from public spaces or hosts.
  • Sponsors pay for a term, not for influence. Local employers and businesses can underwrite a term of sessions with a small public credit line. They don’t choose topics or speakers.
  • A collective option. If the project grows, members and sponsors could share costs and decisions in the open. That is an idea to test, not an agreed structure.
  • Teachers are paid or thanked in public. A modest stipend where funds allow, and a credit on every lesson either way.

How we’d know it’s working

  • Showing up. Sessions held, people who came, and people who came back.
  • Finishing. How many cohort members finish the outside course or certificate they started.
  • Using it. A one-question follow-up a month later: did you use what you learned? What changed?
  • Published, not hidden. Counts posted on this page each term, with no personal details. If a track doesn’t help, it gets changed or dropped.

A first term

Small enough to start this winter

  1. Run four free library-style evenings this winter, one per track, and publish each as a lesson.
  2. Start one peer cohort on a free course (the county library’s courses or the AI Foundation path) and report how many finish.
  3. Invite one aerospace team and one local business to each host a public session.
  4. Ask El Camino College, the South Bay Workforce Investment Board and the El Segundo Public Library whether they’d co-list sessions. Nothing here implies they’ve agreed.
  5. Post the first term’s counts on this page by spring 2027, and change the plan based on what people used.

About this study

How it was made

Pre-publication review, October 30, 2026: removed unverifiable claims, corrected source dates and narrowed rankings to the observations the sources support.

Drafted by Claude (Anthropic). Independently reviewed and corrected by ChatGPT/Codex on October 30, 2026, from the cited public sources. Michael Hoydich approved these corrections and publication. Review removed inaccessible-source claims and unsupported rankings, narrowed national and county figures to their actual scope, and replaced shortened quotations with contiguous source excerpts. The tracks, formats, funding and first term remain proposals. All 21 sources are listed in study.json with each quote and the date it was checked.
