Gear and etiquette basics
Our own short primer for open play. Posted rules at each court come first.
Paddle stacking
At busy open-play courts, waiting players put their paddles in a rack or line by the gate. When a game ends, the next four paddles go on. Winners usually come off at most courts, so everyone keeps moving. If a court posts a different rotation, follow it.
Joining a game
Wait off the court until the point ends, then walk behind, not across, a live court. Say hi and agree on the score call before the first serve. Mixed levels are normal at open play. If a court is set aside for a level, play the level that's posted.
During play
Call the score before each serve. Call lines on your own side, and when you aren't sure, give the point. Send stray balls back between points, and shout "ball on" when one rolls into a live court. Keep games to 11, win by 2, unless the group says otherwise.
Gear
Court shoes with side support help more than a fancy paddle. Outdoor courts use the harder outdoor ball, and indoor gyms use the softer indoor ball. Bring water, and bring a net at courts that say "bring your own net".
Reservations and walk-ons
A paid reservation or a City program has the court at its start time. If you're walking on, leave on time when the booked group arrives. At Rec Park, unreserved courts are free first come, first served.

Open courts come from rec.us's public court listing, read a few times a day. It shows only whether a court can be booked, never who booked it. If that read fails or is switched off, this page shows the published weekly schedule instead.
Still missing: Lights at Rec Park are not confirmed by the City. PTL (pickleball.com team league) match times are not shown: no public source link was retrieved. Torrance and Hermosa rec.us listings show no publicly bookable slots, so they get booking links, not live counts.
